A San Diego Staycation

Jacumba is a world away, right in your own backyard. An hour east of San Diego on historic Old Highway 80, the Sonoran Desert opens up into a small town with wild horses, no stop lights and hot water rising from deep underground. This is your Desert Oasis. Come for the day and soak in San Diego’s only natural mineral pools, or stay the night and enter the vortex under a dark desert sky.

The Staycation

A Deeper Escape

For couples seeking California weekend getaways, Jacumba is the rare kind of place where the itinerary can stay unfinished. Among Southern California hot springs, it’s one of the few where you can soak, eat, see a band and walk back to your room without ever getting in the car.

Accommodations range from artisan hotel rooms to spacious Guest Houses, all built into the high desert setting rather than around it, with exposed wood, local stone and views out to the mountains. The King and The Double sit closest to the pools and the bar, an easy walk from your soak back to your room. The Lodge and The Village House offer separate living areas for more space, and La Ranchita gives larger groups a private house of their own. The Casita goes a step further with its own natural mineral spring soaking tub on the patio, so you can soak at any hour you want.

After your soak, or before the bands starts Long Shadow serves seasonal dishes made from what’s local and in season. Between meals, the spa tent offers restorative treatments. Once night falls, the desert goes dark and the stars come out in a way you don’t see from the city.

The Daycation

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is included in a hot springs day pass in Southern California?

A hot springs day pass at Jacumba gives you access to the Ritual Pool or Solstice Pool, mineral-rich waters that rise naturally from deep underground. Pool towels are provided, so leave your own towels and floaties at home. Only mineral sunscreen is allowed in the pools, out of respect for the natural ecosystem that feeds them — bring your own or pick some up at the Check-In Trailer.

Can you visit Jacumba Hot Springs without staying overnight?

Yes. Jacumba is made for both the overnight wanderer and the day guest. You can book a pool pass without staying at the hotel, making it an easy day trip from San Diego or a slower stop while passing through the high desert. Check in at the trailer out front when you arrive — you can't miss it.

What should I know before making the trip?

Jacumba is a small high desert town, and part of its charm is how remote it feels. The nearest grocery store is in Alpine, about 45 minutes away, so bring any medications or essentials you might need. There are no EV charging stations in or near town, so plan your charge accordingly. Weather also runs to extremes here — summer days get very hot and winter nights can drop below freezing — so check the forecast and pack for the season.

What should I bring to a hot springs day visit?

Bring a swimsuit, sandals, sunscreen (mineral only, for the pools), and something to layer as the desert air shifts. For a hot springs day pass, it's also worth bringing a little extra time, because Jacumba isn't the kind of place that rewards rushing. Outside food and drink aren't permitted on hotel grounds, though guests staying in the Casitas, La Ranchita, or the Village House are welcome to bring their own.

Is Jacumba good for a romantic weekend getaway?

Yes. For couples seeking California weekend getaways, Jacumba offers the right kind of quiet: mineral waters, desert skies, slow mornings, and rooms, suites, casitas, and guest houses designed for a longer stay. Some casitas also include private mineral spring soaking tubs. Please note Jacumba is an adults-only property — guests must be 21 or older, and pets aren't permitted in the hotel or mineral pools. To protect the privacy of guests and the tranquility of the pools, photography isn't allowed poolside, though you're welcome to take photos in your room.
